YEARLY FESTIVAL & EVENTS

 

 

CHINESE NEW YEAR

Celebrations of Chinese New Year in Brunei are observed with reference to the dates of the Chinese lunar calendar. The festival usually takes a period of two weeks, where families reunite and gather as well as exchanging gifts and greetings. A grand dinner on Chinese New Year eve is a major highlight of the celebration. The dinner represents abundance, prosperity, and good luck for the year ahead.
Celebrations of the grand festivals begin with a procession featuring dragons, devils, and serpents. Lighting paper lanterns and firework shows also marks the grand celebration for the festival.

BIRTHDAY OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD

(Every 12 Rabiulawal; the third month in the Islamic lunar calendar of Hijrah) This day is also known as Mauludi'l Rasul in Brunei. To celebrate the birthday anniversary of Prophet Muhammad SAW; Muslims in the country, usually the men, have a mass gathering at Taman Sultan Haji Sir Omar Ali Saifuddien. His Majesty the Sultan then leads a procession on foot through the capital city's main streets accompanied by members of the royal family. This day serves as a reminder about how Islam began and the Prophet's journey.

NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION ( Month of Feb)

(23 February) Two months of preparations culminate in this grand celebration. The National Day celebration provides an opportunity for the public and tourists to witness how the country celebrates this occasion. Attended by His Majesty and His Royal family, the event starts with a march pass in front of the Royal Dais led by the giant Brunei Flag Carrier, followed by the contingent of National Day logo flags carrier, The Royal Brunei Armed Forces, The Royal Brunei Police Force, other uniformed agencies, ministries and departments, districts, private sectors, private schools, higher educational institutions, colleges, schools, associations and public organizations. After the Oath Recital for National Day, witness a colorful and raucous performance from the participants.

ROYAL BRUNEI ARMED FORCES DAY
(31st May) Royal Brunei Armed Forces Day is a day to mark the formation of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces in 1961. The public will have the opportunity to see the Brunei military parading and performing military demonstrations such as parachuting exhibitions or mock battles. The displays are organized by the various units of the armed forces. The occasion is usually commemorated at Taman Sultan Haji Sir Omar Ali Saifuddien in the city center or at the Bridex Exhibition Centre. Previously known as the Brunei Malay Regiment, was given the royal title and had the word 'Diraja' added in 1965, officially marking it the Royal Brunei Malay Regiment.

 

 

HIS MAJESTY THE SULTAN'S BIRTHDAY

 

(15 July) It is the birthday bash of the year for His Majesty the Sultan dan Yang Dipertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam, where congratulatory banners and light displays will start going up as early as June.  
The day usually starts with a gathering of school children and civil servants at Taman Sultan Haji Sir Omar Ali Saifuddien in the capital; where students line-up along the roads leading to the field to enliven the glorious atmosphere with the waving of the national flags as well the beating of the 'hadrah' to greet the arrival of our beloved monarch. His Majesty the Sultan dan Yang Dipertuan will then deliver a speech to the nation and later His Majesty then consented to inspect the guard of honor mounted by personnel of the second Battalion of the Royal Brunei Land Forces, the Royal Brunei Navy, the Royal Brunei Air Force, the Royal Brunei Police Force, uniformed government departments and associations. Ending the ceremony, the public will be able to witness a fleet of aircrafts and helicopters from the Royal Brunei Air Force passing the Taman Sir Muda Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien skies, leaving trails of yellow, blue, white and red smoke, which represents the colors of the National Flag of Brunei Darussalam.
In the evening, the Istana Nurul Iman palace hosts a mega banquet for the royal family, visiting dignitaries and the country's luminaries, ending the day with a grand fireworks display, which the public are allowed to see.
The ceremony of every 15th July commences a month-long of celebration activities in conjunction with the His Majesty's birthday. These activities usually include a month-long night market at the capital and the other 3 districts in Brunei.

 

AWAL RAMADHAN


(Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Lunar calendar) The holy month of Ramadan is set aside as a period of introspection and abstinence for the Bruneian Muslims. It is a month of fasting where Muslims refrain from consuming food and drinks from dawn to dusk for the whole month.
During this period, government offices close at 2pm and food markets open up in the afternoon for people buying food for their evening meal. The food stalls sell a variety of local cakes, pastry and fruits are set up at various places. This is a month to try the many different dishes and local cakes, pleasure to the taste buds and cheap too.
Only the sick are excused from fasting during this month. Muslims are expected to avoid lying, breaking promise or cheating during the month of Ramadan.

HARI RAYA AIDILFITRI

(First day of Syawal, the tenth month of the Islamic Lunar calendar) This is the country's biggest celebration marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and often carries on for a whole month. This day signifies a triumph of the spirit in completing one of the five pillars of Islam and a new beginning. Prayers are held in the early morning of the first day of Hari Raya at every mosque throughout the country. The first day is usually a family get-together occasion, although they do accept visitors. The second day sees friends and relatives visiting one another. Food plays a key role in the celebration and there are treats that are only available during this time.
Furthermore, during Hari Raya; the public and tourists get the opportunity to meet His Majesty and other members of the Royal family during the Palace Open House, usually for three days starting from the second day.

HARI RAYA AIDIL ADHA

(Beginning of Zulhijjah; the final month in the Islamic lunar calendar of Hijrah) This day is also known as Hari Raya Korban or Hari Raya Haji to Bruneian Muslims. It marks the end of the Haji or holy pilgrimage to Mecca. After the Aidil Adha prayers at the mosques in Brunei, families usually invite their relatives and friends to come over to their house for a big meal. The word 'korban' means 'sacrifice', hence in that spirit, the meat obtained from the slaughtering of animals such as cows and sheep is distributed to the poor.
To determine the beginning of the month Zulhijjah in Brunei, moon sightings at various locations in Brunei would be held at the end of the month of Zulkaedah.
