Explore Brunei’s ancient maritime heritage at the Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum, where centuries-old artifacts and the breathtaking remains of a 15th-century shipwreck reveal the nation’s rich history in Southeast Asian trade and its enduring connection with the Maritime Silk Road.
The Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum, located on the historic banks of the Brunei River in Kota Batu, offers visitors an immersive journey into Brunei’s vital role in regional trade from the 14th to 17th centuries. Established in 2015, the museum features three main galleries, with its flagship display being the Brunei Shipwreck Gallery, which showcases over 13,000 artifacts, including ceramics from China, Vietnam, and Thailand recovered from a 15th-century shipwreck. This collection highlights Brunei’s prosperous trade relations with China and Southeast Asia and includes an exhibition on Kota Batu’s legacy as a bustling trading hub. The museum provides a rare glimpse into Brunei’s legacy as a vibrant center of maritime commerce and cultural exchange.
For those without access to a private car, we recommend using Dart (think of it as Brunei’s Uber or Grab) which is the most convenient option for traveling in Brunei. While it provides hassle-free booking and convenience, keep in mind that pricing may vary.
